TRNC President Heads to UN Meeting in New York
During a press briefing held at Ercan Airport in Nicosia, the capital of the Turkish Cypriot region, Tatar emphasized that "direct flights, direct contact, and direct trade with the TRNC" are vital conditions for initiating intercommunal negotiations on the Cyprus matter.
He highlighted the importance of removing barriers that isolate the TRNC internationally.
Tatar accused the Greek Cypriot side of escalating disputes instead of fostering a constructive climate. He urged the international community to acknowledge this situation and to "stand by the Turkish Cypriots."
According to him, the Greek Cypriot administration is not contributing to peace but is instead aggravating tensions.
Reaffirming that the TRNC will not relinquish its claim to independence, Tatar stated that his mission in New York is to defend the legal entitlements and interests of Turkish Cypriots.
He also alleged that Greek Cypriot authorities are targeting TRNC property holders—both individuals and businesses—through "a campaign of arrests," which he described as intimidation tactics.
He criticized the UN for taking a passive stance on regional developments and asserted that he intends to stress the fundamental value of "peace, stability, and security" in any potential resolution regarding the island.
The UN-hosted informal Cyprus meeting, led by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in New York.
Besides Tatar, expected attendees include Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, the foreign ministers from the guarantor nations—Türkiye, Greece, and the UK minister for EU relations.
